Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens better known by her stage name Queen Latifah, is an American rapper actress and singer. In music, film and television, Queen Latifah has won the award of two Screen Actors Guild Awards (two Image Awards), a Grammy Award as well as six more Grammy nods and has been nominated for an Emmy Award. Queen Latifah was born in and lived in Newark New Jersey the daughter of Rita teacher who taught at Irvington High School and Lancelot Owens Sr. an officer in the police force. Their divorce occurred at the age of Latifah was ten. Latifah was raised in the Baptist faith and attended Catholic school at Newark New Jersey. Latifah was the stage name she used before she reached the age of eight. It means very sensitive in Arabic. Latifah's height of 5'10" made her a powerful performer during high school. She performed the song "Home" from The Wiz during a play at her highschool. Latifah started beatboxing in the women's fresh rap group. Latifah is one of the original participants of Flavor Unit, which was at the time a group of MCs around DJ Mark the45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. The recorded was sent to Yo! MTV Raps which is hosted by Freddy. Dante Ross, an employee of Tommy Boy Music who heard the song, and then made a deal with Latifah in 1988 to release her first track Wrath of My Madness.
